SHORT STORY WRITING PROMPTS
If you are a teacher like me, you know nothing is more frustrating for kids than having to write something but having no ideas come to mind. Teaching writing skills is a big deal and I would like to give you some fresh ideas to make this issue easier and have our kids spending more time working on their writing skills.
Foundational skills are hard with the younger students because teaching writing skills is not only teaching handwriting but also the elements of a story. In order to encourage students to write I have created writing prompts for short stories to encourage them to enjoy writing. Practicing short story writing helps children to develop important skills, such as critical thinking, cause and effect, and of course, writing.
These
short stories writing prompts are ready to use. You just need to print and go;
no preparation is needed! My writing prompts include dice as a short storywriting prompt generator. There are three dice with short story
prompt pictures that will answer who, what and where. Teachers need to print
them and give them to the students. The kids will color them and make them into
dice just by folding the templates.
Students will roll the dice and get narrative writing
prompts for creating short stories that they will write down in a short story
prompt list. These short story creative writing prompts are designed to include
fun characters such as a pirate, a monster, a robot, a dinosaur and a shark and
the short story prompts will be developed in real settings, such as in space,
in the sea, in a jungle or in a castle. Moreover, my short story prompts for
elementary students give the “what?” of the story giving kids an opportunity to
develop their own plot lines.
What is included in my resource? Three basic story element dice representing who, what and where and a writing worksheet with the story prompts lists and the blank space where the students can develop their writing ideas. There are the worksheets options and a vocabulary list to make writing easier!
These resources come in a black and white. I use these short story writing prompts for elementary students in two different ways. In a writing center in my classroom where students write during workstation time. Secondly, I also use the writing prompts templates for the writing assignments. For extra fun, my students share their stories with their classmates to show how incredible they are at writing.
Download my short story writing prompts PDF here! I also have the Spanish version of these
writing prompts available! Explore students’ creativity this school year while having fun. Writing should not be
boring, and your kids will have so much fun with these short story writing
prompts!
All my best,
Ms. Herraiz.
